Stephen Williams MP (1966 – )
Member of Parliament (MP) for Bristol West from 2005, Stephen Williams was the first openly gay Liberal Democrat MP and the first openly gay MP for a Bristol seat.
Born in South Wales, he graduated from the University of Bristol in 1988 with a degree in history. He became a City councillor for Cabot ward in 1993. He contested Bristol South constituency in the general election of 1997, and Bristol West in 2001, finally winning Bristol West from Valerie Davey (Labour) in 2005. As Liberal-Democrat spokesperson on schools, he organised the first ever Education and Skills Select Committee investigation into school bullying, and in June 2006 launched a campaign to combat homophobic bullying.
He retained his seat in the 2010 general election, increasing his majority from 38.3% to 48% of the vote. He served in the Cameron–Clegg coalition government as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department of Communities and Local Government from 2013 until his defeat at the 2015 General Election.
He is currently (2025) a councillor on Bristol City Council.
