Matt Lucas (1974 – )
Matthew Richard Lucas is a British comedy actor famous for his work with David Walliams in the television comedy show Little Britain. In 2006 he was placed 9th in The Independent newspaper’s list of the UK’s 100 most influential gays and lesbians.
Lucas was raised in a Jewish family in Stanmore, Middlesex, and educated at the prestigious Haberdasher Aske’s Boys’ School. He studied drama at the University of Bristol (1993-5). He began his career on the London stand-up comedy circuit aged eighteen.
Lucas made the spoof interview series Rock Profile, and portrayed the surreal score-keeping baby George Dawes in Reeves and Mortimer’s show Shooting Stars before moving on to Little Britain. He created characters such as Andy Pipkin, Bubbles de Vere, and Daffyd Thomas – ‘the only gay in the village’. Best known is Vicky Pollard (‘yea but… no but…’), inspired by Lucas and Walliams’s recordings of Bristol schoolgirls in Broadmead shopping centre.
