Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans History Month takes place every year in February and celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community.

LGBT Bristol have produced a programme of all local LGBT History Month activities as a pdf leaflet and plain text Word document.

OutStories Bristol are co-ordinating a number of events including:

  • A month-long exhibition at Mshed, revealing the lives of Lesbian Gay, Bisexual and Trans people in Bristol, from 1950 to today.
  • A talk by novelist, playwright and director Neil Bartlett.
  • An exploration of the life of Michael Dillon, and his role in Trans history.
  • Guided history walks in Bristol and Bath
  • A cycle tour of locations associated with Bristol’s most pre-eminent gay icon.

The event is to celebrate the start of LGBT History Month and to launch the Diversity in Primary Schools Project. LGBT Bristol will be providing refreshments. There will be entertainment from Sing Out Bristol towards the end of the evening.

If you are involved with an LGBT organisation LGBT Bristol would like to invite you to talk for a few minutes about your group or organisation at the open mic session. Space for publicity materials will also be available.

Neil Bartlett is a writer, director and performer whose work is steeped in the histories of gay men’s lives. In this event, he will talk about his work, which includes his first book, Who Was That Man? about Oscar Wilde, published in 1988. He has written several novels, including Mr Clive & Mr Page (which weaves together the stories of Gordon Selfridge and Rock Hudson) and numerous plays, including A Vision of Love Revealed In Sleep, about gay Jewish East End artist Simeon Solomon.

Departing from Queen’s Square, Bristol

CycleOut leads a guided bicycle tour of  the life of John Addington Symonds. Born in Clifton in 1840, Symonds was an early advocate for the legitimacy of same-sex love, and the writer of several pioneering works.  The cycle tour will cover about 10 miles at a relaxed pace, stopping at significant locations from Symonds’ childhood and personal life.

The tour departs from the King William statue at centre of Queen’s Square, Bristol (or outside Graze bar on corner if access to square restricted.)  The event is free, but donations to OutStories Bristol project gratefully received.

Accessibility: This is a two-hour event involving stop-start cycling at a relaxed pace to suit the group.  The ride involves some hills.

Diana Souhami’s biographies explore the most influential and intriguing of 20thC lesbian (and gay) lives. The subjects of her unflinching eye include Radclyffe Hall, Garbo, Cecil Beaton, Gluck, and queens of the Parisian demimonde: Natalie Barney and Romaine Brookes. She has also written about the nurse Edith Cavell, and the story of her stay on ‘Robinson Crusoe’ island.  Her latest book, Murder at Wrotham Hall, examines the case of a murder that took place in Kent shortly after WWII. All her books from Gluck to Coconut Chaos are being rereleased by Quercus in February, in paperback and Kindle formats.

Michael Dillon was the first person in the world to undergo medical gender transition from female to male. Oxford educated, he trained as a doctor and played a key role developing the modern medical view of transsexuals. He also assisted with the UK’s first male-to-female gender surgery. Cheryl Morgan explains how the modern history of trans people began here in Bristol, and how two World Wars helped make this gender revolution possible.

Meet outside the Register Office, Corn Street; nearly opposite the Exchange and the Nails

Bristol historian and author Andrew Foyle leads an easy stroll (lasting around 1.5 hrs) through the city, lifting the curtain on our own peculiar and sometimes outrageous histories. He will be accompanied by British Sign Language interpreter.

Booking:  please book online at Eventbrite, as places are limited. £3 suggested donation.

Accessibility: British Sign Language interpreted. Mostly level on city street terrain, using pedestrian crossing for major roads. One 20m uphill section; one 50m downhill section; approx 100 metres upward slope.

An illustrated talk by historian Robert Howes about the development of cartoons representing homosexuals, from the early 19th century to the present. Taking examples from Britain and other countries, the talk will show how images of homosexuality and LGBT people have been constructed through cartoons and caricatures. Starting with depictions of scandal by a usually hostile press, the talk will go on to show how LGBT cartoonists have used the medium to comment on the everyday incidents of domestic life.

Jack Wolf explores characters and writers who were (probably or possibly) transgender and discuss his research into real life 18th/19thC women who chose to live as men. He will also discuss the challenge of writing a trans character in a historical novel whose experiences are as real as possible yet still make sense to modern readers. Jack’s novel, The Tale of Raw Head and Bloody Bones, has just been published by Chatto & Windus.

Meet at the War Memorial in Queen’s Parade, Bath

A walk around the centre of Bath, pointing out the buildings and monuments which have LGBT associations, either as places where people socialised or as meeting places for the LGBT movement over the last forty years. The walk should last about an hour and a half and finish back by the War Memorial, with the option of warming up in a local tea-shop. Led by Robert Howes of Gay West.
